First off, let me explain what a RAW files really is:
Raw files are proprietary image file formats created by high end digital
cameras. These files have not been interpolated by in-camera software
and as such still contain all the data captured by the camera’s
photosensitive chip at the moment of exposure. They cannot be read or
displayed by anything other than dedicated imaging software. We use them
for the immense flexibility they give us in preparing the highest
quality delivery images. For those of you familiar with film, the raw
file’s closest analog is the negative – can’t be used as a communication
tool on it’s own, needs specialist equipment and knowledge to get the
best result. Raw file conversion and final file preparation forms an important part of my business.
That being said, we don't give out RAW files for many reasons, and I don't know any other photographers that do! I often get the question, "Can I buy/get the unedited images?" from clients, hense, the purpose for this post. I feel the need to explain why I do not offer them.
There are several reasons for this:
#1- when I edit, I cull the images (load them on to my computer) and go through them with Adobe Lighroom to determine the best images from the session or wedding. If there are several poses, I will select 1-2 images of each pose to edit and present to my client.
#2- I "cut" the images I believe are not up to my professional standard. This may mean, blinking eyes, out of focus, fuzzy subject, ect...for instance, if I take 5 shots of the same pose, I don't present all of them, simply because it's theoretically the same image...no need for extras.
#3- I do not allow editing of my work..if I hand out unedited images, I could be taking the risk for that to happen. What you need to understand, is I have certain style and a reputation to uphold. So if a client edits one (or more) of my images, it no longer reflects what my work typically looks like.
#4- when you pay for my services, you are not just paying for the session, you are paying for the time I take to edit. I put my heart and soul into each and every session, painstakingly stressing over every image.
#5- I pride myself on our high standard of file prep. The images that
leave my studio are ones I know will maintain my good reputation.
And I'm sure there may be other reasons as well, just couldn't think of them at the moment. These are my main reasons as to why I do not give out RAW files.
I thank you for taking the time to read this, and hope it answers all of your questions.

Makylee & Jazmyne {child session} | Iowa Portrait & Lifestyle Photographer
Makylee and Jazmyne are little loyal clients of mine. I have been shooting their child sessions for the last 2 years, in addition to family sessions with their parents. These little girls have so much fun at their sessions, they even pose for me! They're so cute and it's such a joy to take their photos :)
Melanie & Tyler {wedding} | Iowa Wedding Photographer
The Anderson wedding was held at the gorgeous Willow Ridge Golf Course & Restaurant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. It was a beautiful day and my clients were truely amazing!! Melanie and Tyler had ideas of their own in addition to mine, they were up for anything. I can honestly say, this was by far my favorite wedding I've shot. Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. Anderson who got married July 21, 2012.
